July 4 Outdoor Adventure Reminders

DILLON—As the July 4th holiday approaches, the Forest Service would like to remind those who are planning for the holiday weekend that there are great places throughout the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest to visit.  The forest has over 3,200 miles of trails, 76 campgrounds, picnic and recreation areas, as well as being home to the Anaconda Pintler Wilderness and the Lee Metcalf Wilderness. Among the traditional camping, hiking and fishing activities, visitors are known to also enjoy wildflower viewing, photography, exploring the back country and a multitude of family activities.  Additionally, there are 24 rustic cabins available throughout the forest for rent during the summ

Maud S. Canyon to Be Sprayed for Noxious Weeds

BUTTE — For those who enjoy hiking or biking in the Maud S Canyon, you may have noticed a high density of spotted knapweed, thistles and toadflax throughout the area. To combat these invasive plants the East Ridge Foundation, Full Armor Weed Control, AmeriCorps St. Louis, the City-County of Butte-Silver Bow, and the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest will be working cooperatively to treat the weeds on Monday, July 1. Approximately 80 acres will be treated with all appropriate weather conditions, label rates and regulations followed. Ground treatment by spray crews using backpacks may be seen throughout the day along the trail and in open areas near the top of the loop trail.

Midsummer Night Jam tickets on sale now

DRUMMOND – The Midsummer Night Jam has opened ticket sales for its 2019 event. The event, featuring rising country start John King and local musician Levi Blom has begin selling tickets online (www.DrummondConcert.com) and at select businesses in and around Granite County. The concert is July 13, 2019 at the American Legion Rodeo Grounds in Drummond, Montana. Gates open at 5 p.m. with music kicking off at 6:30. King’s career has been on a rocket ride since the first of the year. DRUMMOND - The Drummond Rodeo Grounds got a makeover Friday night in preparation for the 78th Annual Drummond Kiwanis PRCA Rodeo July 7. The American Legion Gold Star Post 125 and the Kiwanis Club of Drummond, Montana installed a set of new chutes at the north end of the arena. These chutes are used for roping and steer wrestling events during the rodeo. The 78th annual event has a full slate of activity scheduled for July 7. Young anglers get hooked at Father’s Day Fishing Tournament

DRUMMOND – It was another good turnout for the annual Father’s Day Fishing Tournament Saturday. The event was held at Conat’s Pond in Eastern Drummond. Hasten Burner had the most fish of the day with six, winning the Age 0-4 division. Kelsey Greany (Age 5-9) and Grace Anderson (Age 10-14) each snagged three fish on the day and won their respective divisions. The division winners each received a fishing pole for their efforts. Anderson also had the biggest fish of the day at 13 inches and received a $10 cash prize. NOTE – All images from the event were taken by Dorene Pfendler. #FathersDay #FishingTournament

Longest Day Volunteers to staff refreshment station at Bearmouth Rest Area

BEARMOUTH – Local volunteers for the Alsheimer’s Longest Day awareness program will be staffing a refreshment station at the Bearmouth Rest Area on the eastbound I-90. The station will be at the rest area from 8 a.m. to approximately 4 p.m., serving those making the stop free cookies and refreshments. Donations will be accepted. #Alzheimers

NWS projects Lightning, snow for Granite County

GRANITE COUNTY – The National Weather Service is projecting some odd weather for the first official day of summer in Granite County. Temperatures will be dropping well below seasonal averages for the next week or so, with precipitation included in the forecast. But that moisture may take the form of snow in the southern part of the county with Philipsburg and Georgetown Lake likely seeing some snow overnight and into Friday. The NWS has stated that locations above 6,000 feet could receive between 2-6 inches of snow. Wildlife and Transportation Summit report available online

Partners convened at the inaugural Montana Wildlife and Transportation Summit held in December 2018 at Carroll College in Helena to chart a course for working together to improve safe passage for wildlife and travelers on Montana roads. The Summit Final Report is now available online at www.mdt.mt.gov/pubinvolve/mwt/. Drummond Schools Lunch Program: June 17-21, 2019
