Trojans best Blackhawks; Ladies fall by nine

DRUMMOND – The Drummond Trojans and Seeley Blackhawks rang in the new year with games in Granite County Friday night. The boys held off a tough Blackhawk squad while the girls came up short in a come from behind attempt.

Drummond’s strong showing in the first half gave it the barrier it needed to hold off a charging Blackhawk squad Friday night to earn its first victory of the new year. The Trojans advance to 5-1 on the year with their only loss coming to Class B Powell County.

“It was a good win for us,” said DHS Head Coach Levi Parsons. “We came out and kinda played like a yo-yo. We’d play four good minutes and the drop down and they’d crawl back in, and then we’d pick it back up again. It was good but there were some frustrations.”

That ‘yo-yo’ was in the up position for most of the first half, as the Trojans came out with a blistering pace on both ends of the floor to take a 21-11 lead. They hit the hit 20-point mark again in the second, but Seeley matched them with a 19-point effort to make it 41-30 at halftime.

The locals ebbed a tad in the final two stanzas, but played well enough to earn their second win in district play.

“We hammered a lot on our offense over the break, passing being one of them,” continued Parsons. “Our last major game was against Powell County and that was by 20 points. So we crunched down on that and making sure the ball is getting where it needs to be with accuracy. The other thing we’ve been working on is the man receiving the ball coming to the pass.”

Chase Goldade, who missed several games before the holidays due to family commitments, was a welcome return as he posted 19 points to lead the way. Trey Phillips posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Colt Parsons rounded out the double-figure scoring with 11 while Sam Bryant was close behind with nine points and nine rebounds.

The Trojans will get almost a week to prepare for their first game against cross-county rival Granite Thursday in Philipsburg. All four games that night will be broadcast on the NFHS Network.

The Lady Trojans didn’t find their rhythm until the fourth period, but by then 16-point lead the visiting Blackhawks had built up was too much to overcome.

“We got in a rush,” said DHS head Coach Nate Bignell. “We got the ball and got in a hurry. It’s a lot of little things that if we clean them up, the game would be a little different.

“It’s our first game out in three weeks. So it’s a little like the first-game jitters.”

Sophomore Lexi Nelson was the only scorer to get into double figures with 11, while Macy Williams, Holly Hauptman and Liz Perry contributed eight each. Perry was the top rebounder with 15 and Hauptman 10.
