Lady Prospectors roll to first win in District 13C play, Boys fall to Pirates

PHILIPSBURG – The Granite Lady Prospectors found their rhythm heading into the holiday break, beating Victor 45-27 to start District 13C play 1-0.

Juniors Ramsey Smith and Montannah Piar led the way early, scoring a combined 13 first quarter points (Smith 9, Piar 4) to help the Lady Prospectors take a 15-7 lead. From there the defense took over, holding the visiting Lady Pirates scoreless for all of the second period. Victor’s next basket came at 5:15 of the third quarter, making their scoreless streak time a total of 11 minutes and 11 seconds.

“We played hard tonight and brought our game in our house,” said GHS Girls Head Coach Cash Laslovich. “It was that team win and felt good to play as a team tonight. I am proud of these girls! Can't wait to play Anaconda at home in a few weeks.”

Smith led all scorers in the game with a season-high 23 points that included a trio of three-point baskets. Piar got her game dialed in, using her ambidextrous penetration to score 18.

Rebounding stats were not available, but Ella Tallon and Addi Lilyquist controlled the boards to hold Victor to a single shot on most possessions.

The Prospectors kept it close for a quarter until the visiting Pirates began marauding them on offense to secure the 20-point win.

“They’re just really young,” said GHS Boys Head Coach Mindy Avila of her team. “(I’ve) got to get them to play a full game.”

Granite trailed by only 10 heading into the final stanza when Victor unleashed an 18-8 run that doubled the final margin.

One high note for the locals was the return of freshman Jake Dauenhuer to the lineup, scoring a team-high nine points on three three-point baskets. Dauenhuer had missed the start of the season due to a leg injury during the Titans’ football season.

Asa Lattin had six points and Jayce Quinlan and JJ Lee each added five.

Granite will regroup over the holiday break and take on Anaconda at home to start the new year January 5.
