Titans roll in season opener, beating Darby 52-12.
PHILIPSBURG – The defending state champions picked up where they left off last year, rolling over their opponent in Week 1 58-12.
It all got started when senior Avery Metesh took the opening kickoff back 75 yards for a touchdown just 10 seconds into play.
“I told the team right before we went out there that I was gonna bring this thing to the house and I did,” said an excited Metesh after the game. “Blockers were great and I made one move and I was off to the races.”
Starting quarterback Andrew Tallon found Leyton Wagner on a crossing pattern in the end zone for the point after and the locals were up 8-0.
Not to be outdone, the visiting Tigers needed just three plays to get their first score of the night, a 67-yard keeper by QB Preston Smith that brought the score to 8-6.
But that was as close as Darby would ever get, as Flint Creek added 30 more points in the period and 14 more in the second to hold a commanding 42-6 lead at intermission.
Co-Head Coach Jerry Metesh was cautiously optimistic about the win. “We came out and got after it. But we’re gonna have to look at some film and we have a lot to work on for next week.”
Flint Creek will host Troy September 3 at 7 p.m. in Drummond, with the JV team traveling to Darby to take on the Tigers Monday afternoon.
