Lady Trojans fight back to claim five-set match from Granite

DRUMMOND – In rivalry games, it always seems to come down to one play that eventually breaks the other’s spirit. And with the match tied 2-2 and Drummond leading Granite 12-9 in the fifth, the Lady Trojans came up with a huge play.

It was that play that launched Drummond to a 15-10 set win and a 3-2 match victory.

As the play began, Drummond’s Paytn Rasor served the ball, with both teams getting a few touches before Lexi Nelson sent a set deep into Granite’s back court. Ramsey Smith got a hand on it, with Ella Tallon chasing it down near the rear wall. Her ‘pass’ found Montannah Piar who sent the ball back to Drummond. The Lady Trojans’ Holly Hauptman fielded the ball and passed it to Jesse Struna, who saw the Granite back court running back into position and figured a well-place deep set might do the trick.

It did.

Drummond’s crowd erupted and it launched the girl’s in blue to a win and a 3-0 record in the District 13C standings.

For Granite (1-3, 1-2) it was the second straight five-set loss this week, the first coming in Philipsburg to visiting Valley Christian.

Drummond’s Hauptman led all attackers at the net with 11 kills with Liz Perry close behind at 10. Lucia Lee was the top hitter for Granite with nine and four blocks. Struna was tops in assists with 33 with teammate Nelson leading in aces with eight.

Both teams are off until September 15. Drummond will take to the road to play at Victor while the Lady Prospectors host Seeley Swan.
