Trojan Girls, Boys lock down third in District 13 standings

DRUMMOND – The Drummond Lady Trojans posted a commanding 53-22 win over the Darby Tigers Friday night, securing third place in District 13 play as they head into the postseason.

That position will give the Lady Trojans a home game in the opening round of the playoffs against either Darby or Victor, who play each other tonight. The winner will head to Missoula to play Valley Christian with the loser coming to Drummond.

The Lady Trojans opened their win over Darby with a quick bucket off the opening tip followed by a staunch press and solid passing. They ran the score out to 6-0 before the Tigers could answer and built a 10-2 lead. But Darby’s Makena Hawkinson hit a three-pointer and a late bucket to cut the lead to 10-7 when the first quarter buzzer sounded.

“Those two seniors (Deana Parke and Gracie Weaver) are playing great right now,” said DHS Head Coach Nate Bignell after the game, “and those freshmen are stepping up huige these last few games. Every single one of the girls has been playing great.”

The second period saw Drummond maintain its pace on both ends of the floor, scoring with more passing while keeping Darby at bay. The tigers were within 14 at the start of the final stanza when Drummond really put its foot on the pedal, outscoring the visitors 18-0.

Holly Hauptman led the scoring for Drummond with 18 points, followed closely by Jesse Struna with 14.

The Lady Trojans will close out the regular season Saturday at Valley Christian.
