Titans tame ‘Cats, beat Superior 54-22

SUPERIOR – After two games that saw Flint Creek come out in shaky fashion, the Titans regained their form in strong fashion Friday night with a decisive 54-22 victory over the Superior Bobcats.

Superior won the coin flip, but that proved to be the only winning they’d do the entire game. After differing to start with the ball in the second half, the Titans’ Avery Metesh took the opening kickoff and returned it 72 yards for a touchdown. Andrew Tallon hit Colt Parsons with the point after pass and the rout was on 8-0.

“We really came out hard,” observed Flint Creek Head Coach Jason Ostler. “Any time you get an opening kickoff return it makes my job a lot easier. That sure helps.”

On their fast start to the game Ostler added, “Even last week against Victor we didn’t have a great start. We’ve just got to come out, get a great start and play that Titan football from the get go. It makes a huge difference.”

After Metesh kick-started the locals they scored three more times in the opening stanza to take a 32-0 lead.

Superior fumbled on its first possession with Flint Creek recovering on the Bobcats’ 38. A few plays later Tyler Burden got his first of two long scoring runs, rambling half the field for a 40-yard score with 7:22 to go in the first.

Six minutes later Tallon and Metesh hooked up on a 24-yard scoring pass for a 24-0 margin. Superior fumbled again giving the locals the ball on their own six. Burden completed the period’s scoring outburst just 30 seconds later when he raced 74 yards for another TD.

“We just did a great job blocking up front,” said Burden of the runs. “I really appreciate our linemen and we came out hard like we need to every game.”

The game’s pace slowed a bit in the second with Flint Creek taking a 40-0 lead into halftime when Tallon and Metesh connected again on a 34-yard scoring pass with 1:42 to play in the second.

The Titan QB-WR duo scored a third time in the third quarter, but this was unlike your normal pass play. After receiving the ball, Metesh dropped it in what everyone assumed was an incomplete pass. Everyone, that is, except Metesh. Not hearing a whistle, the senior receiver alertly picked up the ball and raced 58 yards for the score.

The play was officially ruled a catch, a fumble and eventually a score.

As the period neared its end, the Titans began to cycle in reserve players to finish out the game and gain some valuable experience. They got the latter in spades as Superior took advantage of the change to score three times before game’s end.

‘Cats quarterback Orion Plakke and receiver Derek Milender connected on a pair of scoring passes and running back Chase Woodson found the end zone to narrow the margin to 46-22.

Flint Creek stopped the bleeding and the scoring in the game’s final minutes when Chase Goldade pierced the Superior defense with a 19-yard scoring run that gave the game its final tally.

The Titans will return home October 8 for its final regular season home game against the Charlo Vikings. Charlo is 2-3 on the year and is on a two-game win streak after losing its first three games of the year. The Vikings are slated to the Horsemen Saturday night at Plains.
