Lady Trojans trounce visiting Seeley in three

DRUMMOND – If ever there was a statement game in girl’s volleyball, the Drummond Lady Trojans made one Thursday night.

Playing what was the arguably hardest week in their district schedule; the Lady Trojans emerged with straight-set wins over third-place Valley Christian Tuesday and second-place Seeley Swan Thursday. The victories improved them to 8-0 against District 13 foes with just four matches left before the postseason begins October 26.

In claiming the sweep, Drummond was in control the entire match. They did trail at times, but never allowed the Lady Blackhawks to stray too far ahead.

After the match DHS Head Coach Paige Fickler was asked about having first-place and the tiebreakers over the Eagles and Blackhawks and what more she wanted, to which she replied, “A whole lot more. But we’re working on that one game at a time.

“I always worry about where their head space is at. Like we’ve talked about before, bringing our own energy and being our own energy, and they definitely brought it today. If Seeley was going to beat us on anything it was going to be them getting excited and trying to put us down because we have the better hitters and more talent. We have more options.”

Those options manifested themselves from the hands of senior setter Jesse Struna who dished out 27 assists to her teammates while also collecting two service aces and a pair of kills. Junior Delaney Wagner led the attack at the net with 10 kills, with seniors Liz Perry (8) and Holly Hauptman (6) close behind. Perry and junior Lexi Nelson each had two blocks, with junior Bailey Parke on top defensively with 12 digs.

For her play Struna was tabbed as the Kiko’s Mexican Restaurant Player of the Game.

The Lady Trojans now have four games remaining against the bottom half of the standings, beginning with a game at Lincoln Tuesday. They’ll then face cross-county rival Granite Thursday in Philipsburg. The last time Drummond faced the Lady Prospectors they were pushed to win in a five-set match that went to the wire.
