Lady Trojans cap regular season with sweep of St. Regis

DRUMMOND – It was three and done for Drummond Saturday night as they swept St. Regis in straight sets, 25-9, 25-20, 25-9. The match was a final tune-up for the Lady Trojans as they prepare for they prepare for the District 13C Tournament next week in Missoula.

“I was expecting St. Regis to be more competitive and send the ball back over,” said DHS Head Coach Paige Fickler reflecting on the victory, “and I was expecting the balls to be hit from the 10-foot line or the back. I wasn’t expecting the attack from the outside to the short corner. But we made an adjustment and it didn’t work out so well in the second set but we figured it out by the third.”

Drummond dominated the opening set before the Tigers finally found their rhythm and started using that outside attack. St. Regis closed the gap in set two but when the Lady Trojans took control in the third it was all over.

Holly Hauptman and Liz Perry led the attack at the net with seven and six kills, respectively. Perry also had the team’s only block. Jesse Struna had 19 assists and Lexi Nelson had a tea-high 3 aces.

As the top squad in the District 13C Tournament, Drummond drew a bye in the opening round. A bye that Fickler would rather her team not have had.

“I didn’t want the bye, but the district didn’t put it in place to pass the bye down,” she said. “I would have preferred playing for stating purposes for my kids and just being on the floor. But since we’re not playing or practicing at Valley (Christian) it’ll be good to come in and play Darby or Victor.”

The Tigers and Pirates are the 6th and 5th place seeds in the event, with Seeley having drawn #7 Lincoln. Granite plays the host Eagles at 11:45 a.m.
