Lady Trojans beat Darby, stand alone atop D13 standings

DRUMMOND – The Drummond Lady Trojans may have just put the worst behind them … for now.

With their sweep of the Darby Lady Tigers Thursday night the locals are 6-0 in the District 13C standings, having already played #2 Seeley Swan and #3 Valley Christian on the road. Their cross county rival, #4 Granite, will be a short 30-minute jaunt to Philipsburg that comes Oct. 6.

“That’s exciting. A little nerve racking, but it’s exciting,” said DHS Head Coach Paige Fickler when being asked about the first-place standing and what lies ahead. “I don’t know if we can stop anything from happening. We just have to prepare to be better than we were the last game. So we just have to focus on being the best versions of ourselves and keep attacking and keep perfecting our offense, our defense, (and) our serving. That’s our number one goal.”

While Drummond was in the driver’s seat for most of the match, Darby did make a substantial run at the Lady Trojans in Set 2, losing by just seven points. The Lady Tigers tried to carry that momentum into Set 3, but the Lady Trojans clamped down on their miscues and rode it out for the win.

Part of that course correction was the play of the Drummond hitters. Junior Delaney Wagner finished with 10 kills, eight of which came in the first two sets, Senior Holly Hauptman picked up the baton from there and logged five of her seven kills and three of her team-high seven aces in the final stanza.

Hauptman’s performance netted her the Kiko’s Mexican Restaurant Player of the Game award.

Senior setter Jesse Struna provided their opportunities with 20 assists in the match, and tied classmate Paytn Rasor in digs with six each.

Now Drummond begins the second round of their district schedule Tuesday when they host the Lady Eagles of Valley Christian.

The Darby JV pushed the Lady Trojan underclassmen to the brink Thursday night, with the locals holding on to claim a 3-2 victory over the visiting Tigers.

It took a well-balanced attack to garner the victory. Remington Cline had eight kills but was followed closely by CyLeigh Langton and Kimber Parsons with six apiece and Brooke Hicks with five. Hicks was also tops in digs with 11 and tied Cline in service aces with five.

With the win the Drummond JV have not lost a match in the last two seasons.
