Lady Prospectors topple Lady Vikings for district lead
CHARLO – The Lady Prospectors have been digging hard this volleyball season, and they may have just struck gold.
In a battle of unbeaten teams, Granite emerged with a three-set sweep of the Lady Vikings in Charlo Friday to secure the district’s number one spot.
With each team only playing the others once in the new 13C & 14C combined district format, the victory also gives the Lady Prospectors (4-0) the tiebreaker over Charlo (3-1) in the standings.
Granite will play its third match in as many days Saturday when they host Noxon in games set to start at 4:30 & 6 p.m.
For the Lady Vikings the road only gets tougher, as they must now regroup before hosting third place Drummond Saturday, also at 4:30 & 6.
“Early in the season we didn't do a great job of preparing for our opponent and focusing,” said GHS Head Coach Kaley Hansen. “This game we did both of those things well and we were able to play a really tough team and come out on top.”
Senior Montannah Piar and junior Addi Lilyquist both had big games, logging double-doubles in kills and digs. Piar finished with 11 kills and 10 digs while Lily quist flipped those stats to have 10 kills and 11 digs. Ramsey Smith and Addison Spehar each added five kills with Smith also notching that many blocks at the net. Spehar was tops from the service line with four aces.
Granite has now played, and beaten, each of the other top four teams in the standings with its remaining matches all against lower seeded teams. They will get challenges in play when they attend the Manhattan Christian and Mineral County tournaments later this year.
