Granite sweeps Lady Lynx

PHILIPSBURG – It was a welcome win for the Granite Lady Prospectors Tuesday night, beating visiting Lincoln 3-0. The win improves the locals to 3-3 in District 13C play.

After lodging an easy 25-7 victory in the opener, Granite’s play faltered slightly in the second as they won a close 25-23 battle. But they fall in play wasn’t due as much to any one issue as it was to GHS Head Coach Kaley Hansen trying to make sure that her entire roster got some playing time.

“My ultimate goal was to get everyone in on JV as well,” Hansen added after the match. “Not all of them get to play together all of the time, so that was part of it. We had a setter who had never played on varsity before, but played very well.”

While the Lady Prospectors continue to work on team communication, it is also working through some leadership issues with a squad that is split between seniors and sophomores – the present vs. the future.

Relationships are the hardest thing I’m finding right now,” continued Hansen. “We’ve hashed that out a few days last week and luckily we have three days of practice this week. I think we’re on the uphill side of it now.”

Granite’s .500 record still leaves them in position to secure a good position heading into the district tournament next month and a chance to advance to the divisional.

Sophomore Montannah Piar led the attack at the net with six kills and three blocks, while Ella Tallon had 10 assists and six aces. The latter served lengthy strings to start each set, giving the Lady Prospectors an edge they would never relinquish. For her efforts Tallon was tabbed at the Kiko’s Mexican Restaurant Player of the Game.

Granite will move on to the Mineral County Volleyball Tournament Saturday at Superior.
