Flinty Creek 6-0 after rolling past Sheridan, 74-0

DRUMMOND – It was supposed to be a test for the Titans, a chance to see if they were actually the caliber of team that many expect them to be this year. And with their 4-2 record and touted as one of the top teams in the South, Sheridan was supposed to administering that test.

But in the time it takes to heat a couple of burritos at Fic’s gas station, Flint Creek established a solid lead and scorching defense on its way to a 74-0 blowout of the Panthers Friday night in Drummond.

It started early, with Sheridan quarterback Kole Hill fumbling the ball away on their first series. The Titans fell on the ball and took possession on the Panther 29-yard line. In one play Cade Cutler hit Ethan Parke with a pass in the end zone for a 6-0 lead. Parke’s one-handed grab brought the local fans to their feet as the team took the lead with 11:15 to play.

Sheridan tried several pass plays on their next series, but just a minute after the opening score the Titans regained the ball when senior Tucker Weaver sacked Hill on fourth and 1. That gave Flint Creek the ball at the Sheridan 35. Cutler hit Avery Metesh on the first play of the drive for 32 yards, setting up Cutler’s eventual three-yard jaunt into the end zone. With just over two minutes gone the locals were up 12-0.

Just a minute and a half later Cutler was scoring again when he busted a gang of Sheridan tacklers and rushed for a 55-yard score.

And just 90 seconds after that Tyler Burden broke off a 48-yard scoring run that put Flint Creek up 28-0.

When Cutler hit Preston Metesh with a scoring pass at 2:48 to move the score to 36-0, the running clock was on and the game was well in hand.

“We really didn’t know what to expect,” said FC Head Coach JC Holland. “We haven’t played them in forever and they just moved up from 6-man to 8-man, so we really didn’t know what we were going to get. I know it sounds goofy, but we prepare for everybody the same every week. These are just high school kids so we can’t afford to take a week off.”

When the second quarter started, the Titans picked up where they left off. Cutler and Andrew Tallon each added short scoring runs to advance to the lead to 50-0 at halftime, and repeated the feat with longer scoring efforts in the third to advance the margin to 66-0. Tallon added one more 37-yard scoring run in the fourth for the game’s final tally.

With the win Flint Creek remains the No. 2 ranked team in 8-man football statewide at 6-0. Fort Benton currently holds the top spot after beating Simms 37-18 Friday night, while Thompson Falls in No. 3 at 7-0 after blasting Troy 75-0. Joliet fell from the ranks of unbeatens when they fell to Park City Friday Night, 46-42.

The Titans will face off with the Tigers in Darby in Week 8 of the season.

NOTE – Prior to the game the Flint Creek coaching staff surprised the players with new uniforms that just arrived this week. The Titans are now a perfect 1-0 in their new duds.
