Drummond turns slow start into win in playoff opener
DRUMMOND – It took the Lady Trojans a quarter to get going, but once they did they easily put the
Darby Tigers in their rear view mirror in claiming a 55-30 first round win in the District 13 playoffs.
Darby took a 9-6 lead after one period that had some people in the Drummond gym concerned, but their fears were quickly put to rest when the locals exploded for a 17-4 run in the second that gave them a lead they would never relinquish.
“Darby came out to play and I kind of knew they were going to,” said DHS Head Coach Nate Bignell. “There’s always things you need to correct, but the main thing is just to play our game, take care of the ball and play good defense.”
The Lady Trojans opened the game purposed to try and get senior Hannah Bradshaw a basket. Bradshaw re-injured her knee in the final week of the regular season is expected to miss the rest of the season. Prior to the opening tipoff, she stood under her team’s basket with a large leg brace in place. Teammate Holly Hauptman sent the opening tip to Deana Parke, who quickly whipped the ball to Bradshaw who laid it in. Bignell called a quick timeout and got her to the bench.
Another senior who had suffered injury several weeks earlier, Sydney Phillips, was attempting to come back from a severely sprained ankle. It was expected that she would play just a few minutes. As it turned out Phillips delivered a game-high 18 points to lead Drummond to victory.
Joining Phillips in double figures were Parke and Hauptman with 12 points each.
The Lady Trojans and Lady Prospectors will tangle for a third time this year when the face off Thursday at 5 p.m. Granite reached the game with a 55-7 win over Lincoln in their first-round game.
In the other first round game Victor beat Valley Christian 44-38.
