Darby player loses battle with cancer

DARBY – Darby graduate and former player Jake “Sunshine” Sanders passed away Wednesday morning.

Sanders had been battling lymphoma cancer since last year when he was diagnosed. After his insurance in Montana ran out of benefits, his mother flew him to Texas where it was determined he had limited time to live. His mother, Deb, then flew him home to Montana late Thursday night so he could spend his final days in his adopted home.

Sanders was honored by the Tiger and Titan players, coaches and fans October 5 when the two teams played in Drummond. Darby took a penalty at the start of the game for delay of game in honor of Sanders. Flint Creek, not wanting the visitors to be penalized for their act, then jumped off sides to even the game and give the Tigers a fresh start to the contest.

Both teams wore fluorescent green with #61 (Sanders’ number when he played) written on it.
