Lady Trojans give Mustangs a run in girls volleyball

DRUMMOND – Drummond’s volleyball team took on the defending Class C state champions Saturday night at home, hoping to avenge a loss in Ennis August 31. But try as they might, the Lady Trojans were unable to get a leg up on the Mustangs as they fell in three, 25-19, 25-5, 25-20.

“I don’t know,” said Drummond Head Coach Shona Bradshaw of her team’s play. “Something got into us that second set. But to bounce back after a game like that and play as well as we did in third … We’re improving; constantly improving.”

After falling behind in the opener, Drummond battled back to close the gap to a single point on several occasions but could never get ahead. Game 2 saw the locals fall quickly to the visitors from Ennis. In the finale, the Lady Trojans were in charge until the score reached 14-14. At that point the Mustangs took the lead and never relinquished it.

Hannah Bradshaw had a team-high seven kills and a pair of service aces. Hailey Swarengen had five kills and Sydney Phillips had four to round the Drummond attack. Rylee Hilmo and Sara Kielley split the team’s eight assists with four apiece.

The Lady Trojans take to the road next week, playing at Charlo Tuesday and in the Manhattan Christian Tournament next weekend.
