Trojans sweep into postseason with victories over Lima

DRUMMOND – The Trojans and Lady Trojans got their mojo headed in the right direction Saturday night with both teams picking up much needed wins as they head into the District 12C Tournament next week in Butte. First round play will begin Thursday at the Maroon Activities Center with brackets set to be released Monday.

Lima stayed within reach of Drummond for a quarter, but when the Trojans hit the gas in the second they pulled away for what would be a great way to end the season for the young Drummond squad.

“They came out ready to play and gave a good effort all the way through,” said DHS Head Coach Levi Parsons of his team’s play. “There were a couple times our defense got stretched out of position that they capitalized on. Those kids (Lima) are some good shooters.

“Our offense looked good. We didn’t push the floor as much as I wanted to, but once they got into the offense we actually ran some stuff and last night (vs. Ennis) there was none of that.”

The Trojans took an early lead on the emotional play of senior Wyatt Rigby, who came out fired up and scoring eight points in the first eight minutes. When he cooled off slightly, freshman Colt Parsons took over scoring 10 in the second on his way to a game high 19 that included a trio if three-point buckets. Guard Caleb Parke rounded out the double figure scoring with 11. In his final regular season game as a Trojan, senior Conley Wagner scored five points.

Now Parsons and his team will turn their attention to the postseason that begins in just five days.

“We want to push the ball. Other than that we want to go into the tournament with confidence, and I think we got a little of that back tonight,” observed Parsons.

Once the Drummond press kicked in, it was all but over for the visiting Bears as they lost to the Lady Trojans.

The opening stanza was low-scoring through the first seven minutes and was tied 6-6 when Sydney Phillips hit a three-point shot with 50.1 seconds to go. A quick steal and shot found Jessie Struna collecting ball and tossing it back in for two points and an 8-6 Drummond lead.

But Lima inbounded the ball and got it to Reatta Crafton who nailed a three as time expired to give the Bears a 9-8 advantage.

Between periods DHS Coach Nate Bignell made some adjustments that included a 2-2-1 press that quickly produced results. Several turnovers, good team defensive play and quality shots led to a 17-2 second period run that gave the Lady Trojans a lead they would never relinquish.

“The girls started working together and playing as one,” said Bignell. “It’s a great way toi get ready for the tournament. Now it’s go time.”

Phillips led the locals with a game-high 19 points while senior Rylee Hilmo scored 10 in her final regular season game.
