Granite, Drummond slip into consolation bracket at 12C volleyball tourney


TWIN BRIDGES – Both local volleyball squads finished the first day of play with 1-1 records at the District 12C Volleyball Tournament Thursday, slipping them into the consolation bracket for Friday.

Lady Trojans

Drummond started off the day with a first-round win over Sheridan in three straight, 26-25, 25-15, 15-22.

The Panthers led 24-22 before junior Hannah Bradshaw stepped to the line and reeled off four points that helped the Lady Trojans secure the victory.

Bradshaw led Drummond with six service aces and was tied with teammate Sydney Phillips with six kills. Bradshaw also notched four defensive digs along with Gracie Weaver, Rylee Hilmo and Phillips. Deana Parke was tops in assists with 11 and Philips and Holly Hauptman each had a block

The win advanced the Lady Trojans into the tournament semifinals against the Ennis Mustangs where the locals fell in four games, 14-25, 25-22, 14-25, 7-25. The loss puts Drummond into the consolation bracket of the tournament where they will face Harrison-Willow Creek at 9:30 a.m. Friday morning.

Against the Mustangs Drummond got off to a slow start in the opener, but recovered to even the match at 1-1 after a close victory in Game 2.

Drummond collected just 15 kills in the match, led by Phillips with five. She also tied Hauptman for the team lead in blocks with 1 apiece. Parke had 12 digs and eight assists while Weaver led with two service aces.

Lady Prospectors

After receiving a bye in the first round, Granite moved on to sweep the Falcons in three games, 25-19, 25-21, 25-16.

Asha Comings led the Lady Prospectors with seven kills and 14 digs, while Jessie Struna was tops for the locals in Assists (8) and Aces (7). Reece Pitcher had four of the team’s six blocks.

The victory put Granite into the winner’s bracket finale against Ennis, where the Lady Mustangs emerged with a straight set win, 25-12, 25-14, 25-20.

Audrey Radtke and Amelia Hill each had four kills in the match, with the former also collecting nine digs. Struna dished 17 assists in the defeat.

“Against Twin the girls played like a team and the energy was fun; it was fun to watch, fun to coach and overall a solid showing,” said GHS Head Coach Jennifer Graham. “The Ennis game was greatly different; the biggest aspect missing was the element of team.”

Ennis rallied to claim the final two games and the match.

The Lady Prospectors will face tournament host Twin Bridges in the consolation bracket where it’s lose and go home. That game will take place at 9:30 a.m.
