BUTTE – The Lady Prospectors staged a fourth-quarter comeback that fell short, losing to Twin Bridges in the championship game of the District 12C Tournament at the Maroon Activities Center (MAC) in Butte Saturday night. The second place finish still leaves them with shot at playing in the divisional tournament next week in Frenchtown.
After a slow first period, the Lady Prospectors started to find their rhythm in the second. But as they did, the Falcons kept pace by breaking Granite’s press and scoring several easy buckets. As a result, Twin Bridges extended its lead to 24-12 at halftime.
Neither team came out after intermission with any offensive rhythm, but the Lady Prospectors suffered more than that Falcons. During the eight-minute stanza the locals got only a pair of free throws from Rachel Ward and lost center Amelia Hill to her fifth personal foul with less than a minute on the clock. To further their woes, Granite committed its seventh team foul in the period to Twin Bridges’ four, leaving the Falcons in the bonus the remainder of the game.
The fourth quarter became something of a mêlée, with Granite attempting to stage a comeback and the refs letting play continue despite some hard play. But in the end, the Falcons lead was too much to overcome in such a short period of time.
A big factor for the Lady Prospectors was Twin’s ability to shut down Asha Comings who finished with just three points. Audrey Radtke led the locals with nine points that included a pair of three pointers and six in the final quarter. Rachel Ward finished with eight.
With the loss, Granite will face a challenge game Monday against Consolation champion Ennis. That game will be played at the MAC in Butte Monday at 6 p.m. The winner will enter the Western C Divisional Tournament Thursday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. against the first place seed from District 13C.
