GIRLS: Lady Trojans best Granite at free throw line

DRUMMOND – In a game that was riddled with foul trouble for both teams, it seemed only fitting that the decision would come down to one of its most basic elements – free throws.

The Lady Trojans hit 12 more from the charity stripe than did the visiting Lady Prospectors to escape with a 41-35 win at home Saturday night. The win elevates Drummond to 5-1 on the year.

The hosts held an 8-7 lead after one and extended it with back-to-back 10-point periods in the second and third. But over that same time Granite found a opening in the Drummond defense, taking advantage of a back-door pass that jkept them close throughout.

“It was good coaching that we didn’t know about and we had to adapt to it,” said DHS Head Coach Nate Bignell. “I thought we did that in the fourth quarter.”

The Lady Prospectors managed to get the game as three points late in the fourth, but it was the free throw shooting of the Lady Trojans that won the day. Both teams shot 31 free throws with Drummond making 19 and Granite just seven.

Subsequently, Granite made three more buckets from the field than did Drummond.

Hannah Bradshaw played a quietly consistent game, finishing with a game-high 19 points to lead the Lady Trojans. Sidney Phillips, who missed the last two minutes of the second quarter with a twisted ankle, finished the game with 13 points.

Asha Comings was the only double-figure scorer for Granite with 12.

Granite will take the next week to prepare for their road game at Ennis Jan. 10, while Drummond will use the same to prepare for their home game against Sheridan the same night.
