BREAKING: Bitter cold headed for Granite County



GRANITE COUNTY – An arctic front will bring bone-chilling temperatures to Granite County and the surrounding areas this week.

The National Weather Service is forecasting temperatures well below normal for the weekend and into Monday, with some relief coming Tuesday. But along with the colder temps, strong winds are likely to accompany the front and will drive temperatures to potentially dangerous lows.

Drummond

Friday will see a 60% chance of new snow accumulation of about an inch. The high will be near 28 with the low dipping to -8. Winds will be out of the northwest at 15-22 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Wind chill could reach -36.

Saturday the high dips to 11 with a low of -18.

Sunday the high is projected for 15 with a low of -20.

Monday’s high will be around 16 with a low of -17.

Philipsburg

For an area that has already received a ton of snow, the new snow accumulations look to be only a half inch or so on Friday. The high should be near 25 with a low of -4. With wind gusting to as high as 20 mph, the wind chill could reach -27.

Saturday’s high is expected to be 9 degrees with a low of -17.

Sunday the high is projected for 5 with a low of -16.

Monday’s high will be around 12 with a low of -12.

Helmville

New snow should be less than an inch Friday with a high of 23 and a low of -14. Winds are expected to be the harshest in Helmville, with gusts as high as 44 mph. This will lower the wind chill to potentially -49 degrees.

Saturday’s high is expected to be 5 degrees with a low of -22. It will continue to be blustery, so more wind chills will applicable.

Sunday the high is projected for 6 with a low of -28.

Monday’s high will be around 9 with a low of -24.

Georgetown Lake

About a half inch of snow is expected with a high near 22 and a low of -3. Winds may gust to 13 mph which will result in a wind chill of -21.

Saturday’s high is expected to be 11 degrees with a low of -17.

Sunday the high is projected for 6 with a low of -17.

Monday’s high will be around 11 with a low of -15.

Pets & Livestock

Remember that during these weather events with bitter cold and severe wind chills to take care of your animals. Household Pets should be brought inside and let out only when necessary. Live are recommended to be inside barns or an area that is shielded from the winds when possible.


Travel Advisory

The NWS is also warning travelers of blowing and drifting snow through the weekend along all roads which cross the Continental Divide. Specific areas mentioned are Missoula, Butte and Anaconda.

If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, coats, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. Also make sure that your car is fully fueled and that your cell phones have a full charge in case of emergency.
