Titans stay unbeaten with blowout of Plains

DRUMMOND – The bigger they are, the harder they fall.

Such was the case Friday night as the Flint Creek Titans easily beat a substantially larger Plains Horsemen team 68-0. The win keeps the Titans perfect at 5-0 and atop the Class C 8-man Rankings, while the Horsemen fall to 1-4.

“Defensively what we tried to take away is that they like to try and test Jaxon (Lee) on deep passes,” said Plains Head Coach Ed Fultz. “He’s electrifying, and ya know we didn’t give that up. We gave up a lot of other things…”

While the Horsemen did prevent a Kade Cutler to Lee deep rout, they did give up a lot on the ground. With Flint Creek running its trademark veer and mid-line schemes, Colby Manley found the open holes and capitalized on them big time. Manley finished the night with three rushing touchdowns and four two-point conversions.

“We threw a different format in there tonight that we haven’t used yet thus year, the four-wide,” said Flint Creek Head Coach Mike Cutler after the game. “We have to work on that so we can use it later and get it on down the field. But they really didn’t show us anything we weren’t expecting.”

While Lee didn’t catch and TD passes, he did score twice on a pair of spectacular punt returns in the first half. The first came after Plains initial series and he took the ball, weaved in and out of the defenders to bring it back 72 yards. The second came in the second quarter when Lee scooped up a ball near the sideline and scampered 58-yards for the final score before halftime.

Titan QB Kade Cutler didn’t have a big night passing, but logged three rushing touchdowns. His longest, a 55-yard run, was the lone score in the third period for the locals.

Braden Huberg rounded out the scoring for the Titans with a seven-yard TD late in the fourth.

With their second straight shutout of an opponent, Flint Creek has now scored 150 unanswered points. On the season they have outscored opponents 302-30.

The Titans should get their first real test of the season next week when they travel to Arlee to play the 3-1 Warriors. Arlee hosts 2-2 Darby Saturday.

“We gotta go up and show up,” added Coach Cutler. “They have a bunch of good athletes on their team. We’ve gotta go up there and try and take the wind out of their sales right away. That could be the best game we play this year.”

Arlee has beaten Troy, Seeley Swan and Plains while their only loss came at the hands of the Charlo Vikings.
